BENGALURU, Oct 25 (Reuters) - India's Axis Bank (AXBK.NS) reported a bigger-than-expected rise in second-quarter profit on Wednesday, helped by strong growth in loans. Loan demand stayed strong as an uptick in consumer spending helped drive retail credit. The bank is seeing strong demand for loans from corporate clients, including for capital spending, it said. Net interest income - the difference between interest earned and interest expended - rose 19% year-over-year to 123.15 billion rupees. The country's top lender HDFC Bank (HDBK.NS) reported a drop in margins earlier this month, while IndusInd Bank (INBK.NS), ICICI Bank (ICBK.NS), and Kotak Mahindra Bank (KTKM.NS) reported second-quarter profit gains.

Savings accounts are low interest rate-bearing deposits offered by Indian banks, forming a third of their total deposits. Public sector banks offer interest rates between 2.70% to 4% on savings deposits, while large private banks offer rates between 3% to 4.50%. Savings deposits rate of banks vs RBI's repo rateThe RBI has been nudging banks at meetings to raise savings deposit rates and may need to push them again if required, the same source said. The RBI said in its monetary policy report that while the increase in term deposit rates in the current tightening cycle has exceeded that in lending rates, savings deposit rates have remained almost unchanged. Yes Bank (YESB.NS), Kotak Mahindra Bank (KTKM.NS) and IndusInd Bank (INBK.NS) are among lenders that have recently said they have no plans to raise savings deposit rates.

IT Services" on Sept. 28, Citi analysts said banks are poised to outperform the information technology services sector over the next 12 months. "We thus believe Indian banks will not be directly impacted by an uncertain global growth or global higher-for-longer policy rate cycles." The bank's analysts expect private sector banks to continue gaining market share from public sector banks. However, Citi noted increasing competitive pressures from smaller firms vying for deals in the IT services sector. The Citi analysts also said that banks are trading close to historical averages on a price-to-book basis.

MUMBAI, July 22 (Reuters) - India's Kotak Mahindra Bank (KTKM.NS) beat expectations on Saturday with a 67% year-on-year rise in net profit for the April-June quarter, helped by higher net interest income and robust loan growth. The Mumbai-based private lender's standalone net profit rose to 34.52 billion rupees ($421.1 million) for the financial first quarter, above analysts' average estimate of 32.4 billion rupees, according to Refinitiv data. Kotak's net interest income, the difference between interest earned and paid out, increased 33% to 62.34 billion rupees. Its net interest margin grew to 5.57% from 4.92% for the same quarter last year. Indian shares set to open higher as strong earnings lift mood
  + stars: | 2023-04-24 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BENGALURU, April 24 (Reuters) - Indian shares were set to open higher on Monday as improved quarterly results from heavyweights Reliance Industries Ltd (RELI.NS) and ICICI Bank Ltd(ICBK.NS) eased some concerns over a lacklustre start to the earnings season. India's most valuable company, Reliance Industries reported 19% growth in fourth-quarter profit, aided by the strong performance in oil-to-chemicals (O2C) segment, post market hours on Friday. Private lender ICICI Bank posted a 30% jump in net profit in the March quarter, helped by improved net interest income and loan growth. The strong earnings of the two companies, which account for nearly 20% of the total weightage in Nifty 50, could improve the sentiment soured by the weak earnings and outlook of top information technology companies, analysts added. Stocks to Watch:** Yes Bank Ltd (YESB.NS): Lender's net profit slumps 45% in the March quarter on higher provisions.
BENGALURU, March 17 (Reuters) - Indian shares advanced on Friday, aided by financials, tracking a rebound in global equities after a slew of measures to support the global banking system eased worries about a crisis in the financial sector. While the developments eased immediate concerns of a crisis in the global banking system, some analysts remained cautious. "The Fed needs to manage a delicate balancing act between price stability (inflation) and financial stability (growth) in next week's meeting." Information technology stocks (.NIFTYIT) rose over 1% with all 10 constituents logging gains. NEW DELHI, Feb 24 (Reuters) - An Indian tribunal on Friday put on hold insolvency proceedings against Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEE.NS), a major relief for the Indian media company that warned the legal battle could delay its merger with a local unit of Japan's Sony (6758.T). The tribunal has put on hold the insolvency proceedings for the time being, saying the matter required detailed deliberations and will be next heard on March 29. During the hearing, Zee counsel Mukul Rohatgi warned its merger with Sony is "going to get stuck" if the insolvency proceedings continue. It competes with Disney's (DIS.N) Star India and Reliance Industries (RELI.NS) Viacom18, and its planned merger with Sony's India unit will create a $10 billion behemoth. Zee on Friday disputed its liability in the tribunal saying, according to them the liability did not meet the threshold for initiating insolvency proceedings.
MUMBAI, Jan 17 (Reuters) - The Indian central bank's discussion paper suggesting banks make provisions on bad loans using an expected credit loss (ECL) method could raise capital requirements for lenders, analysts said. The potential impact of a shift to the ECL mechanism on bank capital could be significant, said the RBI, which is yet to give a timeline for implementing the new rules. The new mechanism will recognise problems ahead of time and make the banking system more resilient in the long run but could raise capital requirements significantly particularly for government owned banks, analysts at Macquarie Research said. "The problem here is that over the last 5-10 years, the probability of default would have been very high for the banking sector and that's why eventual ECL provisions could be higher,” Macquarie said. While the impact on individual banks is difficult to assess at this stage, it could be felt in 2025/26 and banks would have to start preparing in 2024/25 to raise capital, the research house added.

This comes at a time when credit growth is at a multi-year high and bad loans across lenders have reduced significantly. The brokerage said private and state-owned lenders that remained better placed to grow include ICICI Bank Ltd (ICBK.NS), HDFC Bank Ltd (HDBK.NS), Axis Bank Ltd (AXBK.NS), IndusInd Bank Ltd (INBK.NS), Bank of Baroda Ltd (BOB.NS) and State Bank of India (SBI) (SBI.NS). Credit growth is at a multi-year high, with an uptick both in retail and corporate loans. "One key concern going ahead remains how the rising interest rate scenario will impact credit growth."
